Good luck with starting out, I learnt to play at 12/13 but put it down around 16 and then never really got seriously into it again. I did buy a Tanglewood Solid top acoustic when I was about 19 which I've still got and play now and again but never long enough to improve. I've gone from learning riffs on the electric to pretty much purely chords.

I'm at a fairly low standard again at the moment, can play chords all day (playing gauge 11's) and just managed to sort out Blackbird by the Beatles again but I really need to practice to improve again. Its the same with my Keyboard playing. Spent best part of 9 years getting 8 grades on it (7-16 yrs old) but then its hardly been played in last 3-5 years. I get on it now and just can't think of anything to play. Embarassing considering what I could play before.

Cheers Rob - I never had the patience for it as a teenager, I'm hoping now I'm a bit older I'll persevere with it. Glad to hear you're getting back into it though.

My first lesson with my mate probably won't be until the new year, so I'm learning what I can by myself until then. Typing 'learning guitar' in Google was a bit of an eye-opener, there's a ton of sites out there with info & video lessons etc, I don't know which site to choose!

Standby thread resurrection...

I've just started out on learning this instrument...my fingers are feeling the pain...but I thought I'd share this site with you...
I'm using the wife's acoustic, an EKO..which I'm getting to grips with, and a book, Vol 1 etc. Ben surfing around the web and found this...
http://www.musicnotes.com/guitarguru/

You need to download their software. I've been fiddling for a couple of hours tonight, and randomly selected Angie by the Rolling Stones. Isn't it amazing how you think that a tune so simple is yet so complex when you try to get to grips with it your self. I have to tell you that I have the first two bars sounding like the the actual melody, but I am working on it and I suppose the main thing is I am trying to learn a tune that I like/enjoy. I would like to take my hat off to these composers, just amazing.
Back to the website - seems good - a guitar on your screen, and you follow the indicated notes...all part of the perserverance...but my fingers are well sore...should have nice callouses by the end of the year!!

Stingo, if its an Eko jumbo, then good luck with it as theyre pretty hefty guitars! Saying that they make a great sound due to the oversized dreadnought body.

getting a guitar and choosing the music style you are wanting to play i found important.

Schecter exotic star are usa made only but hell of a all round guitar
fender telecaster 1966 blues and rock
b.c rich metel axe gold heavy metel and depending on pickups sounds like a beast

i can say all these guitars kickass, as ive got them and has taken a while to get em but are well worth the money

Your fingers may be ripped to shreads when you start off but all will be well soon, try and stick to one string set as when you switch to a higher gauge your fingers start to get ripped again

i shall put it as this when your done learning guitar not even police finger scanners could be used against you

Sorry to bring up a mega old thread (no point in starting a new one).

I'm desperate to learn the electric guitar, I did have a Strat copy when I was in my teens but that was many moons ago. The guitar was pants, it sounded pants so I gave up pretty quickly.

I love the like's of Zakk Wylde so it doesnt take a genius to work out what I want. I have fallen in love with this...

It's kinda looks odd in a very sexy way which I guess is the idea lol.

Would that be a good place to start??? Be totally honest, will that kep me going for say 3 - 4 years by which time if I'm half decent I can justify something a little better, like say a Gibson.

Have you a guitarist friend who can try it for you? Don't forget a lot of sound comes from the way you play, although cheap learner guitars are often rubbish! Also setup can ruin a perfectly good guitar, and most cheapos have a ludicrously high action. Epiphone are a good brand, and perfectly usable (Noel Gallagher played Epiphone). A Gibson may be a waste of a lot of money! Just don't vibrato like Zakk Wylde (bends the neck!?!?) Amp also is a massive factor in sound.

Epiphone guitars are generally pretty good (just don't go for the absolute cheapest Les Paul Standard models).

That one is a little above a cheap beginner's guitar and will be a better standard than those. Just ensure that the shop does a basic setup for you before you collect it.

I've got an Epi Black Beauty that's done me well for hundreds of gigs. Just rewired it (replaced and improved on the job I did last year)- sounding really sweet.

Have a good go yourself- if you can play a few chords, it'll help if you can work out if your hands fit comfortably around it- that's the main thing for starters.

At the end of the day, for a first (strat copy notwitstanding) decent guitar to start learning on- if you like it, go for it!

There is an Epiphone Zakk Wylde model, with the target paintjob. Not sure how much it is, though...
