In times like these, those in the private sector think that public sector workers have far too many "perks", such as relative job security and pensions. In better times, those in the public sector think that the private sector workers get paid more and big bonuses.

Having worked in both public and private sectors, I reckon there are advantages and disadvantages to both. If the grass is greener on the other side, then there is nothing to stop people moving between the sectors...

Eh? When the government decides to build something i.e. a school, hospital, prison, military facility or anything, where do you think that building's components come from? A private manufacturer or supplier. The government doesn't make bricks, mortar, lighting, HVAC equipment, BMS etc. They buy it from somewhere. It's all part of the economic circle.

As for 1 million people not having great effect, where do people spend their money? In the local economy. Private businesses ranging from the local car or bike dealer right down to the paper shop and pub. No surprise that Ford Motor Company and Honda Motorcycles have reduced their list prices in the last couple of days.

I fully understand what you're saying there. You've got services to provide, but why does the government need to spend 20x what any private company does to do the same thing?

Economic circle? That is just one economic circle, it is not the function of the government to be a player in the only circle in town. This is not communist Russia despite what his tonyness may have tried to achieve!

Why do overpaid idiots in the local authority get to waste money over and over again when a private company would long be bankrupt or the idiots sacked!*

1 million people in a country of what, 50 million? I don't think a 2% drop in the earnings of many businesses would hurt if the cost savings were passed on!




*Granted this doesn't apply to people in banking.

Sorry to read so much bashing of the public sector. In the property and commercial team where I work at Liverpool City Council, there are 2 solicitors - I'm one, colleague Max is the other. The other 7 are unqualified clerks who are expected to churn out huge amounts of work at an average salary each of £17K.

Thats a fairly typical public sector job with a typical salary(outside of London)Even in slightly higher paid jobs such as junior professional posts the pay starts at about £21-£22000.Hardly a kings ransome with which to start paying back the costs of getting that degree and professional qualification.
Then there is the "gold plated"pension scheme.Yes there are some who do really well out of it,and guess who they are?Yes its those middle and senior managers again who have devoted their entire careers to looking after their own interests and those of their peers.The vast majority of public sector pensioners get only a little more than they would take in state benefits if they had no pension(about £5000 per annum is the norm)so actually cost the taxpayer nothing given that they have contributed to the schemes for many years.
Sorry to p1ss on the public sector bashing parade,but you really shouldnt believe everything you read in Murdochs propaganda rags or what a very ideologically bigoted government tells you.

BB I agree entirely. Who else is going to clean public toilets, kill rats, and empty bins.

The worst of it is that the cuts will be "managed"(mismanaged?)by the same old corrupt desk jockeys that already run the show,and they will not be quick to cut their own cushy number jobs.So the hard working useful contributers will be the first to go.
