Anyone offer any buying advice on the T4? Is it advisable to have FSH on these? Seen a 2 owner van which has just been resprayed, carpeted and windowed with some 18" alloys and 60mm lowering, however its only got previous MOT's with no service history to speak of

Most dont unless you go for a Caravelle like i did. Seek advice and do your research before you go and if its too good to be true it usually is. Beware of 1.9td engines, they are good if you get one that has been looked after but look out for wobley crank sprockets (it finished mine and i ended up converting my bus to a full blown 1.9tdi engine). 2.5tdi's are probably the best bet but if there is no history you will need a cambelt changing as a precaution which is about £500 to do properly. 1.9td's are cheap and simple to maintain if you can find a good one. I can do a cambelt in 90 minutes start to finish but i wouldn't attempt it on a 2.5tdi.

Failing all that drop me a PM if you need any buying advice and i will be glad to assist. There isn't much i dont know about T4's and T5's because i have been through so much aggrovation with mine.

Hiya Rob,

first off: www.vwT4forum.co.uk - cracking resource (bit like the org but for campers)

Secondly, I got my 2.5 TDI (blue i - 88bhp version, silver is 102bhp iirc).. for £2400 with 2 months tax, fsh, MOT til nov/dec - it was in a bit of a state when I bought it (see first pics on this thread) but Toby @ T4Life.co.uk, the guy I was buying it from said he knew a guy on his industrial estate who'd respray it for £800... bargainous..

So £3200 all in.. I think I kinda dropped lucky with that because over the last 2-3 months I've seen endless threads on t4forums along the lines of "t4 prices going silly?"... seems there's been a bit of an explosion in people buying campers/t4s/t5s, and also the t4's are starting to pick up a little bit of a cult status like the earlier t25's after a good few years in production.

As for the service history - although I can imagine the van you've looked at is probably absolutely stunning with fresh respray, 18's, lowered with windows and carpet - think of the agro in future when you come to sell it, all of the prospects who walk away because there's no service history with it.. Not to mention the fact that it could well go pop if it hasn't been looked after as much as the previous owner's making out.

Also like JJ says above (he's a mod on t4 forums so he knows his bizzle) there are known issues with the 1.9 td.. I can vouch for the cambelt, £564 @ VW York, £507 @ Roger Holmes VW Specialist in York, and I ended up paying £515 @ JJB audi/vw/alfa specialists because holmes were booked up for months.. It's a very involved job hence the cost (and £125 just for the cambelt kit to boot)..

I'll keep an eye out and let you know if there's any half decent vans for sale rob

Thanks for the good advice guys,

It was this one which appears to have had the timing belt done - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...#ht_876wt_1141

What's the spec on it? Partially converted? Service history? Mines 10 years old with 140,000 on it now & I paid £3200 for it, although it needed cambelt change, a service & auxiliary belt sorting - so your price doesn't sound too far off tbh

ah - looks smart as hell that! £4k considering it's already got the captains seats, carpetted and basically ready to have a bed/furniture stuck in there

I'd be real inquisitive about the service history though - where is it? Why isn't it with the van? If it's been home serviced why didn't the guy keep the receipts?

If that was the same van but with a 2.5 tdi engine it would be the one to go for tbh

Thats what worried me when a seen it.
Maybe if it was 20 year old van no service history wouldn't worry me.

Anyways, this is the van you want (with the van body on!)
