i never trust a torque wrench unless its on new bolts and even then i'm always feeling for failure.
get yourself a big bag of used bolts from ebay and stick the bolt head or nut in a vice then tighten it up using a spanner/wrench/socket and get a feel for stripping threads and snapping bolts. apply some copper grease if you have to as it will help to strip the threads. it often amazes me how tight people think that nuts/bolts should be and i dont think people realise that they dont have to be that tight to be an affective mechanical fixing. wind the nut/bolt down then tighten till a little force can be felt through the hand then nip up, thats all that is needed. if you are going to use a torque wrench then always dial down the torque on an old bolt by 5Nm and make sure the bolt is dry. take great care tightening oily/copper grease nuts/bolts as they are very easy to strip. |

Thank you for the brilliant advice, I am quite comfortable being new and learning, and I am loving it so far, even the mistakes! The video made the team at my work laugh! I have new bolts on order to replace the temp ones, and great advice about the effects of copper grease etc. when it is stated it seems so obvious, but to be honest I hadn't considered that. I do like the idea of getting a load of spare bolt and having a practice, that would definitely work out cheaper. I also got a 3/8 torque wrench in order, so I won't be using that bigger one for smaller bolts!!

good job. i would recommend taking a dermel with a disc brush and some autosol to the seal recesses to polish them up before fitting the seals. the seals should have been installed using RRG (red rubber grease). the RRG stops the corrosion process a bit better and also keeps the rubber seals in better condition. never use brake fluid to put seals in and never ever put them in dry. always service all your callipers once a year and you will never need to buy seals again and also keeps your brakes in tip top condition.
