Oh and also unless you are particularly lucky, keeping down to weight is hard work and sacrifice (hence my previous post where even after trying hard I am still technically well over wight) ... if you build it into your lifestyle and surround yourself with similar thinking/active people however it isn't as big a problem though ...
I like a good feed myself, but strangely it actually makes me feel a bit ill seeing a fat person (and I mean fat now) porking down pizza and chips for lunch ... dunno why as it doesn't effect me in the slightest ... but it does ... Anyhoo, if you try and keep fit and your weight sensible, the net result you should live longer and you feel more confident or at least a little smug ![]() ![]() |

I have a fairly reasonable idea of this, from being trained as a road cyclist. There were tons of lectures, and coaches advising you about diet, and you need to be really aware of yourself because you are on the ragged edge all the time. I still screwed it up twice, and became anemic. But, what you need to know to train is just a more focused version of what you need to know to be alive and healthy. I completely use much the same logic as to what I eat with normal life as I did when I was racing. Reading exercise physiology books such as http://www.amazon.com/Serious-Cyclin.../dp/073604129X will give you a very good idea of what is happening in your body. Once you understand the basics, (and they are not that simple) you can ignore all this diet rubbish, and eat what you need to. There are very cut and dried laws of physics at play. You cannot create energy in your body. If your intake < output, you will lose weight eventually. There is no other option. |

It's all about lifestyle as opposed to going on a diet - just ask any diabetic.
As one I know - I have had to change my eating habits drastically 2 years ago when i got diagnosed. Diabetics don't eat anything special, we just cut out sugar, eat moderate carobohydrates watch the fat etc, in other words sensible. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, look at adopting a low GI eating regime. It doesn't have to be boring, also consider an active/sporty excercise regime as well. A good mix of both gets weight off, keeps it off, and keeps you living longer. |

Only those that have been clinically (ie, by a doctor!) diagnosed as being medically obese really need to loose weight IMO. Society as a whole is overly obsessed with weight/figure, and I (being a relatively thin person) just think it's wrong. Hence why I've outright refused to comment directly on any one person's specific diet etc. It's not me feeling those things, it's not really my place to judge if a diet is chosen. My apologies specifically to Ping, my post wasn't intended to come across that way, merely that if you were grumbling about it before it was 'on paper,' then IMO, the paper shouldn't of pushed things over the edge into action. I realise some people (most women - unfortunately) are at least anxious about weight, but I reckon that in around 90% of cases, there's no reason to feel pressured into loosing weight. Ping, you're slim enough to ride a bike, therefore IMO, you don't NEED to loose weight, if you want to, that's up to you. Not all thinner folks judge the larger ones on weight ![]() |

Ok when I was at the gym tonight I was doing a bit more thinking … I remembered from back at school that it takes 1 calorie to heat 1 cubic cm (1cc) of water by 1 deg C
So the energy used on the cross trainer over 70 mins would only heat 1liter of water 1 deg C…. Next time you boil the kettle think about that … presuming you put 1l water in there, and it starts off out of the tap at 10 deg C it’d take 90,000 calories to boil it … so that’s ~100 hours of cross trainer energy to boil it … that’s like over 4 days of continuous cross trainering … to make say 3 mugs of tea ![]() Then when I was swimming in the outdoor pool ... I was thinking hell its cold in here (outdoor pool) ... but think of the energy/cross trainer work it'd take to even heat this mass of water up by just 1 dec c!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() Hey, look when I am working out I have lots of time to think about stuff … OK!! ![]() |
