Thanks all. We've been waiting for this to happen since he really started go go downhill about nine months ago. We've had time to prepare but of course it's always a blow when it comes. On the bright side, he lived way longer than one of his local GP's said he would, I think to spite him, and he had a nice day on his 80th birthday in November when the whole family came to spend the day with him.

I'm trying to break it to mum now that as he knew everyone in the village, and did odd jobs, gardening and/or decorating for so many of them (usually refusing payment) , that there may well be a lot more people turning up at the crematorium than she thinks...
