Default The Veg Plot 2026

And....Off we go.

The gardening year has started again. I have the heated propagator on the window ledge and I've just sown my first seeds in modules in the propagator. Hungarian Hot Wax chillies, Red Cherry tomatoes, and Black Beauty Aubergines. Next in will be Pak Choi and possibly some winter density lettuce.

Just about to get onto Garden Organic and order a few fresh seeds of various sorts, as some of the seeds I was going to sow are out of date.

Weather permitting next week, I shall get out and cut back some of the stuff I left standing in the beds for the insects to overwinter. I'm also hoping to spread the compost from my pallet compost bins onto the beds.

Anyone else made a start yet?

Well that's a bit of a disappointment. The Organic Gardening catalogue and seed shop is no more. Dobies with whom they were working in partnership are now running the whole seed shop. A shame, as I've been buying seeds from the Organic Catalogue for about 20 years. Ah well. I've gone to Tamar Organics instead and managed to get everything I wanted there.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma for this year veg wise. Not only am I looking to cut back my hours, but we're also considering the upheaval of moving house too... If we do, when is it likely to happen? Will I still be here this time next year or will I be leaving lots of crops behind for someone to potentially ignore and go to waste if we get away mid year? And then we have the freezer to consider - we need to run the contents down ahead of the big day, so do not need the usual surplus going in.

I will probably compromise by growing a lot less, focusing on crops that don't need to go in the freezer, like first early spuds and onions.

Veg plot is coming to life again.

Tomatoes and aubergine plants planted in the greenhouse, All the onions and garlic are in and growing away with the last of the Sturon onions going in just a couple of weeks back.

1st and 2nd early spuds are in with the 1st earlies already poking their heads through the soil. The Swiss chard from last year is growing away well again and I have lots more of this years sowings in modules ready to take over when that tries to flower in a month or so.
Just been potting on Brussels Sprout plants and Pak Choi, and I have cucumbers germinating in the mini greenhouse.

It's all go out there!

I have planted out the early spuds here, and will do the maincrops in a few weeks. The potato tubers and the onion sets ended up in the garage for a week or so during the viewings for our house and the onions did not like it, with a lot going soggy... planted them in modules in the greenhouse but only a few have sprouted so far. Although if we have to wait much longer for the people above us in the chain to get their own purchase sorted it could all collapse leaving us eating all of this year's meagre crop.
