Sidestand mod

Have you ever had the bike fall off the sidestand because the road is not completly level?? Well i have had mine drop off twice even though the stand was put on properly.

Well i found this article on a mod that someone did for a hyabusa, the stand looks the same so i might try it out.

To do this mod- grind a notch into both sides of where the sidestand contacts the bracket so it can swing forward a bit more. The notch only needs to be a 1/16" or 1/8" deep.

yeah ,,iv often thought that it doesnt look fully down(but it is) .do u think that would make a difference re strength??

Mine is the opposite. It leans too far since I put in the GSXR shox, which raised the rear a fair bit.

It's got to the stage where I have a 40mm thick block under the stand and it still leans left! There is a little bit of wear in the pivot bolt so maybe that is the cause?

There's plenty other folk with SRAD shocks but nobody ever mentioned his.

I did that to mine... Doesn't take much. Certainly won't affect strength, you hardly remove any metal. It could be a rust spot if you don't paint or protect it though. Good call TSM.

Mine leans like my dad after a liquid lunch... Looks a wee bit silly, but it's still stable so I'm not too bothered. It can be quite hard to get off the stand with a loaded tankbag and a full tank though (because I'm feeble)

Mine has a load of play in the pivot too, I think that might be part of the problem. I tried fixing raisers to the underside but they fall off. I've got a subframe I need to get straightened, when I finally get that done I might get my spare sidestand lengthened or bent.

This whole problem is due to the SV's slim build.

IL4's get away with a stubbie little leg 'coz the frames are so wide there. With such a long leg the wear is exaggerated.
I did consider welding a block on the foot but it runs close to the chain as it is and I don't want it drooping mid-corner either.

Extra length seems to be the way to go. (Never had a problem in the past. )

Yeah I know what you mean about this but its never gone over (touches wood) You do get some comments, like your bike looks like its gonna fall over lol

Very good suggestion for a quick remedy there TSM.
This does lead me to question how common is it for bikes to fall of their stand? I come from the days when most bikes had a side and main stand and would always opt for the main one if the bike had it. This being the case I am always very carefull where I park my bikes if I only have a side stand to rely on.
I always ensure that the ground where the foot of the stand will be is firm enough, I always kick the stand slightly before leting the bikes weight down on it to ensure it is in the fully "open" position. In addition I always ease the bike on to the stand gently.....just in case.

Based on Fizz's experience the other day I think you should always consider weather conditions also.If it's gusty then the bike should lean away from the direction of the wind and if a fence or wall is present you should consider if that will actually shield the bike a little or add extra turbulence which could disturb the bike on it's stand.

But as oft stated before...what do I know?!

I think with teh SV it's more that it's very easy to not get the stand down right... Certainly the only time mine came off it was because I'd let the bike roll forward a little when putting it down. This mod makes it harder to knock the stand out of position, more than it does make the bike less likely to fall over by itself, I think.
