Default Starter Relay Problems

Anybody come across this before???

Press the starter swich and all I get is a buzzing noise from the starter relay and no power going to the starter motor. Both of the 30A fuses look OK and I can't see any wires shorting out when the buzzing noise is there. It's a 650S from 2000 by the way.

First off check all your cables are connected tightly and in good condition, as the demands of the started are higher than anything else and can show up any bad cabling.

Behind the offside (right if sitting on the bike) side panel you'll see a green cover, in the middle is a square plug, using the clip take it out and check the pins and corresponding sockets as these can suffer water damage, give them a bit of a clean and it should sort it out.

the other thing it could be is the relay itself which is sealed in the black plastic beneath the plug socket, although I've opened it, it's not really a user serviceable part and will need replacing.

Cheers Mark.

Thanks Mark,

I had already checked all the wires and all seemed OK. Cleaned the pins though but it made no difference so it looks like I'll have to try a new relay.

Cheers

Just before doing that, check you have a good earth, as it can look ok and work for most everything else, but still be not up to the job of running the starter.

take it off of the rear engine casing bolt and follow it back all the way, bit of a pain, but might save you a few bob.

Cheers Mark.

I found a test for the relay in one of the manuals I have and it's not doing what it should in the tests so it does look like the relay is at fault.

Thanks for your help.
