03 SV650S willNOT start/crank - I'm at my wit's end! HELP, PLEASE
Good morning guys-
I'm at my wit's end here. I was helping my buddy work on his 02SV650S last night, and now it will NOT start or crank. I'll give a bullet point synopsis of what we did. I'm open to all suggestions and ideas you have to get it going again. If you have any pics that you think will help, please feel free to post. I searched around, but wasn't able to find anyone else who had the same issues as me. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. - started the bike to let it warm up for a few minutes before changing the oil - shut bike off and drained oil and removed filter - while oil was draining, i began work on the flasher relay since he has LED signal at all four corners. I removed the light blue and orange wires from the wiring harness. They are the middle and far right (respectively) wires on the upper row on the wiring harness. See picture. - connected them to the flasher relay and checked operation of the signals. Nothing. - reconnected the light blue and orange wires to the wiring harness - the flashers now work, although blinking at the faster rate - HOWEVER, when the ignition key is turned, I no longer hear the 'whirring' sound - when the started button is pressed, NOTHING happens. - when the key is turned, I do hear a single click which sounds like it's coming from the wiring harness (the same one that I disconnected the wires from. See picture of what dash looks like. - the battery was on a charger all night, and should be charged by now, at least according to the charger (Battery Tender Jr.) It shows a solid green light Is it possible that I have the light blue and orange wires in the wrong position? On the top row of the wiring harness, from L to R, I have Brown - Light Blue - Orange If either the light blue or orange wires are not making a full connection to the 'relay box' could that cause the problem? I checked the two main fuses in the fuse box that the battery is connected to and they look fine. I checked some of the obvious fuses in the fuse box and they are fine as well. When the key is turned, the head lights are on, the flashers blink and the dash lights up. Thanks again for any help you can provide. If you need more specifics, please let me know. I'll do my best to answer them for you. Kind regards, Scott |

The whirring sound is the fuel pump priming, the official sv manual has a excellent fault finding procedure for this type of fault better than the haynes.

You have CHEC lit on the dash
Kill switch off Bike in gear or faulty gear position switch OR sidestand down or faulty sidestand switch Clutch not in, or faulty clutch position switch also search CHEC on here. Your bike won't start until you clear this message. If it's the kill switch be sure to tell us so we can have a good laugh |

Away from home at the moment but I thing the wire with the power to the kill switch goes via the flashed relay, the side stand relay is incorporated inside. Being as you have been playing with this it should be the first thing to check, I think it was orange/yellow
and Orange black?can't remember. Maybe someone with a diagram can recall the colours. The side stand relay joins these together as long as the snd is not down or the neutral light on. Hope I have remembered correctly. Dave I wrote a entry on the starter path on an thread on Sunday called, curvy electrical problem, have a check on that thread it has all the routes and colours , Last edited by warmshed; 03-10-11 at 10:39 AM. |

Thanks guys. Got the bike sorted. Am planning on doing the relay tonight. I assume it's just a matter of plugging the new electronic relay into the oem wires, right?
Disconnect the brown, +, & the light blue, -, and connect them to the relay, right? I'm using a relay from superbrightleds.com, so things should go well. |

Turns out it was the orange/black wire not making contact with the relay. I just pushed it in further and now it works.
Is the relay a plug & play job? |
