Re: The All New Megathread
Morning all. Frozen solid out there this morning. I'm supposed to be doing some gardening for someone today but to be honest I don't think I'll be able to do much beyond turning and tidying the contents of the compost bins. This is assuming I can get the car down the hill here on the ice!
How's the morning looking for everyone else? |

Re: The All New Megathread
Frozen up pretty solid here too. Mel's been using our little car for work as it has all-season tyres which are better in these conditions than the standard summer tyres on our main car. Plus its much lighter so much less momentum if things go pear shaped. The dog has taken refuge in his day bed next to the radiator to keep toasty.

Re: The All New Megathread
Just read an article requesting gardeners not to turn compost heaps at the moment as there is a chance that hedgehogs could be nicely tucked up inside trying to survive the freezing conditions. In the autumn I opened the lid of mine to be greeted by 4 staring eyes, they belonged to a couple of field voles. On a later occasion a pair of eyes belonged to a rather plump toad (probably due to the feast of snails that must have been available! Therefore my compost heaps will not be turned this winter.

Re: The All New Megathread
Sounds like opening your compost bin is an interesting adventure RT. I found a grass snake once in my old wooden ones, but also several rats, so my current plastic compost daleks sit on fitted bases which in turn sit on thick galvanised mesh.

Re: The All New Megathread
RIP dad. I was getting ready to head up to Norfolk this morning when I got a call at half six to say he'd just passed. Thankfully the minus six weather must have put people off travelling as I made it up here in good time, considering the rush hour timing on the M25. Mum is doing OK and has several of us with her now, which is a comfort to her.
Being decimated by cancer is a horrible way to go but the care he received at the end from the NHS as the local council was phenomenal, and he left us peacefully and calmly. I'll be remembering him as the brave fireman that he was for so many years. Here's a pic a friend of mine found once - he's in the driving seat looking really happy. In his prime, doing a job he put his all into. Farewell dad. You'll be missed by a lot of people who loved you a heck of a lot. Fire by Trevor Laight, on Flickr

Oh Trevor, I'm so sorry about your dad but glad his end was peaceful. Parents never really leave when they pass. Years after mine died I still feel them with me in various ways. Cherish the memories, and celebrate the life your dad lived.

Re: The All New Megathread
So sorry to hear that Trev. I hope you got to say everything you wanted to say to him beforehand. I still miss my Dad's advice and hear him say: "why on Earth did you do that?" (usually after doing something stupid).
