Default What do we get for our rates?.

Bloody hell I don't believe it in my best Victor.

Just taken the wife to work and seen two council units clearing up fallen leaves at 6:40am on a Sunday morning. Round the large roundabout on the A6 at Chorley Hartwood Hall

Now are they doing it because

1) they block the gullies/drains and cause flooding.
2) they are a danger to all two wheel users as they become greasy on the bends

or is the cynic in me correct. They are on overtime and anti social hours payments and it is the best way for these guys to inflate their wages.

Although for the first time in 20 years living here, I actually saw a street cleaning unit drive onto the small estate where I live, and earlier this year they finally got round to putting a road sign to tell people that this small cul-de-sac of about 25 houses was a 30 limit coming off a 40 mph road, only 48 years after the road was built.

With respect, you missed the third and most probable reason:

3) H & S - they did it at that time of day because the roads are quieter; there's less risk to the people doing the work and they will cause less traffic aggro at that time of day.

Not saying that there might not be other reasons too, but 3) is the answer you'll get if you ask.

My back alley was full of glass/bricks/dead things and the like, I just built new access at the back for my bike and was pretty miffed at all the crap. Council came and cleared the whole thing, cut the grass and took away all my building rubble too! Excellent.

Surely colonic irrigation would have been cheaper and simpler?

I live in Isligton and pay a crippling amount of council tax, but our pavement is properly swept every couple of days and we no longer have abandoned cars on the street.

I just wish someone would do something about the rubbish quality schools, overenthusiastic parking attendants and the dog poo.
