This is why a lot of people don't bother. Mine was checked at 16k, it's now done 39k......

I'd say it's necessary to do it at least once early on. Then they probably don't change much with later miles. 0 to 16k probably causes the most wear on the edges of the valves. It's definitely good that I checked mine. I'm guessing it's never been done. I have three VTEC valves that are in spec and everything else it too tight. A couple of them very far out of spec too. That's 13 valves out of spec!

I've got a feeling that's why my fuel economy on this and the previous VFR isn't great. The last one got about 35mpg and this one isn't much higher. It'll be interesting to see if that gets better after the valves are done. It would make sense that valves not closing properly wastes fuel.

I've always hated shim based valve systems. It wasn't so bad when the shims were on top of the buckets but having to take cams out to alter clearances is ridiculous.

Having said that neither of my two SV's ever needed adjustment in all the time I had them.

Not bike related, but a little while ago I built some oak Adirondack chairs (with pull-out leg rests) and I finished oiling them this weekend - in time to enjoy yesterday's sun (and a few cold beers).

Thanks both - I'm not a woodwork guy so much, so I was quite pleased with the results. I've built templates -so may do a couple more in softwood (the oak was expensive).

Oil-wise I used 2 coats of Barrettine wood preserver followed by two coats of Osmo UV 420 - it dries to an almost varnish-like finish so should be OK on clothing, and hopefully keep them from silvering for a few years)

Investigating poor fuel economy in the car, started with 4 spark plugs that looked like they were put in, at Nissan 60k ago...

Ended with an o2 sensor error which means cleaning both of them to rule out A) Bad sensors B)Cat converter needing replacing.

Bikes are easier!

Took Suzy for a MOT Monday - stripped down front brake today! Bike passed but pads not releasing cleanly. Waiting for a rebuild kit now.
