Back on the VFR valve clearances. It's been a couple of weeks waiting for VTEC buckets /shims and took a while to remember what I was doing and what my notes meant. Started at 9am this morning and finished this evening (with covers and everything still off as I'm waiting for gaskets). All valves are now within spec. Pleased I got my calculations right first time as this is an expensive one on parts.

I can see why it costs so much to get it done now. I'm £150 down on shims and buckets and then there's the replacement gaskets and washers etc at about £260. That and the 3 days I've worked on it. I imagine it would take someone experienced in doing it at least a day.

Will see how this set go!
Thankfully pads are cheap at only £25 for the set (EBC).
In my experience uneven pad wear, with the pads on piston side wearing the most are down to sticking slide pins. I have used TRW PGF110 grease on slide pins on cars and bikes for many, many years without seeing a problem. What I did find is that if you use too much lube on slide pins it can cause 'hydraulic lock' in the blind hole where pins live, although the pins should have a flat machined onto them to allow air and lube to escape.

I agree, but how did they manage to squeeze all that engine in there ?

My Brother has both a VFR750 and 800 and I don't think he has ever seen inside the cam covers.....

My Callipers are 4 piston (2 pairs opposing each other - BMW F800ST). I've already ordered some retaining pins as they're not in the best of nick, no marks which would inhibit the return of the piston. But at 11 years old they probably need replacing!

I think motorcycles can become too complicated. There should be more consideration given in the design to ease of maintenance.

But then we'd all be riding single cyclinder bikes with drum brakes and elastomer suspension.

You think that's bad, I've just read about changing the coolant in the MV 1000f4 in the latest copy of bikes magazine.
