Unusually for me, I've not ridden the bike for more than a week now. Given just how cold it is out there I think I shall put the battery on charge to keep it topped up.

Same here, and I do the same during winter: if no ride for a couple of weeks, the battery gets a couple of hours on the optimiser to keep it healthy.
There are few things more dispiriting than gearing up for a ride on one of those rare dryish, warmer winter days, only to find the battery is too weak to start the bike. |

Definitely! Although I now live on a steep hill so I can bump the bike down it if necessary.

Well, that didn't need much of a charge. The green light on my Accumate charger came on within a few seconds of hooking it up and switching it on. I left it on for a couple of hours anyway, so my battery is nicely topped up now.
