OK< I am going to get a SatNav for my bike, and I like the look of the Tom TOm rider. Has anyone got any advice or experience as I don't know where to start.

Tomcat has just got a TOMTOM 2 european (see here) and is using it on her trip to Switzerland this week. Maybe hang fire on buying to see what she has to say about it when she gets back?

BluePete has his RAM mount on his bars, uses it to film forwards through the screen on his pointy.

I've got a tomtom V2 european on order. Using it for rideout to mid France next month. Seems like good value to me.

The Rider is a waste of money! The clamp is rubbish and you pay a premium for a bit of waterproofing.
I'm a courier and use a TomTom One. It sits in my tankbag and is connected with a car cigarette lighter connected straight to the battery. If you need to hear the directions rather than just checking the screen you can use and personal stereo headphones. That's what I started doing but now just check the screen every now and then. It also survived the monsoon conditions on AR07 without any problems, so it's fairly waterproof as well. The TomTom one can be bought in Halfords for £179 although I'm sure you can get it cheaper elsewhere. |

I got a rider for £200 and it's superb. I use it all the time (particularly in London). It can be mounted to the bars, even with a clip on using the provided mount. You need to hacksaw the ring that goes round the bars a bit thinner and move the brake/switchgear a few mm to get it to fit, but it works fine.
It's properly waterproof and resistant to vibration, which I suspect car based ones aren't. It also has a brighter screen than the car ones. For £30 extra it's well worth the money IMO. Only downside is there are stories of the plastic holder coming off and tom toms diving onto the road. Tomtom provide a free bit of cord and a clip to rectify this though. I've never needed it on mine and personally am not 100% convinced there's a problem and that it's not just people not doing it up properly (it's easily done if you're not paying attention) |

How do,
I have the first one, when it first came out, its been very handy so so has the speed camera database to. The first one had a lousy mount, the new one I belive uses a RAM mount which should be alot better. I am not a fan of the new bluetooth system the latest one uses but its horses for courses. If I where you get the latest one. Cheers Rich |
