It was 8, when I have my 9th birthday party (i was one of the older ones in my year).

+1 on a ride along in something fast/really loud or sit in one of the police pursuit cars.

I have two boys 5 and 3, and more cars than I ever thought we had room for.
But every time we go out and get a toy it's another car. They are both really into the "Cars" cars at the moment. You can pick these up on Flea Bay for ok money.

+1 on the Nerf guns, got some at Christmas. However prepare for carnage. The 3 year old shot the 5 year old point blank in the face last night. It was my fault, even though the missus bought them!

You could always go down the route of really big noisy plastic thing, kids love them, parents hate the fudging things. Chaos and nowhere to put it afterwards! Again my house is full of them, curse my family.

Whatever you get he'll love. As long as it's not pants or socks. Save them beauties till he's older.

Yes, but you have warm feet. You'd have been old with cold feet without the socks.

If he can't go in something fast yet, more Lego. Fun for him building it, and fun for you when anyone but you steps on it.

A remote controlled car that works upside down. It means it doesn't matter so much if he crashes it. Or a car that can go up/down stairs/curbs.

Failing that, you could buy one for me.

About that age, my dad gave me a go cart with 150cc villiars engine. worked well, although I did a nasty burn to my wrist trying to bump start it one day when ~I was 7, he gave me a ford anglia with wooden blocks attached to brake, clutch and accelerator.

So my opinion. a rich aunt like you, buy some land and a banger for the little chap.
