Thanks all. We've been waiting for this to happen since he really started go go downhill about nine months ago. We've had time to prepare but of course it's always a blow when it comes. On the bright side, he lived way longer than one of his local GP's said he would, I think to spite him, and he had a nice day on his 80th birthday in November when the whole family came to spend the day with him.

I'm trying to break it to mum now that as he knew everyone in the village, and did odd jobs, gardening and/or decorating for so many of them (usually refusing payment) , that there may well be a lot more people turning up at the crematorium than she thinks...

My sympathies also. It's a shock to get such news even though you know it's coming. Take care.

Morning all. Long drive to Exeter today, to take daughter back to her student work placement. I'm crashing at her place overnight and driving back tomorrow as I don't fancy the 460 mile round trip in one go!

How's the week looking for everyone?

That's a long way! At least the roads have mostly thawed.

I'm out of hospital after a few days in for a swollen kidney (it wasn't draining properly and was effing painful). Thank heavens for morphine: the panacea for the physical and mental aspects of the human condition for over 5,000 years ... (antibiotics helped too)

Sounds painful Craig - hope you're on the mend now.

Logged on to work for a few hours today, just to keep grounded. The stuff that built up in the two days I was offline...sheesh.

Been a whirlwind today. Mum's countertype dishwasher arrived, we've been out and got her a smartphone and contract SIM (been PAYG button phone up to now), ordered a new freezer (much smaller one), reassembled the sitting room furniture that was packed into a spare bedroom to make room for the bed dad needed, and took the leftover drugs to the health centre pharmacy for safe disposal (including the morphine-based stuff). I'm knackered now.

Have a safe journey tomorrow Gary.

Morning all. Grey and dismal out there, but at least it's dry(ish). Might try for a short ride out somewhere later today.

Hope you're recovered after the kidney problem Craig.I remember going down with a kidney infection years ago and it was bleedin' painful!

I hope you're coping ok after the loss of your dad Trevor. I think it takes a while to adjust mentally to the empty space left when our parents go.

Mum will feel the empty space most of course, but she has already found the network of friends local to her a great help. As a kid, our road (all bungalows) was full of children and young families, but now it's mainly older people, including several other widowed ladies of her vintage. I'll give a call tonight but I'm sure she will adapt and be fine.
