Once you've done a couple of 'fun runs'

I'd encourage you all to join a local running club.
Pick one that caters for your ability level and the one with the atmosphere best suited to you.

Once you get into the routine of the training sessions on a given evening, you'll find you go more, enjoy it more, improve quicker and that you won't be the slowest by a long way.

Bit daunting turning up on your own but remember that clubs are always looking for new members and will be very pleased to see you.
Much more fun running in a group (and alot safer) and doing different types of session breaks up the monotony of 'going out to do 5 miles' round the same old route every week.

Then you could do what I'm doing now - competing on the track!!

Excellent Sarah, what is your aim for the run? Do you have a time in mind?

My running has taken a bit of a caning since doing the Marathon, I was so disheartened by the whole thing I was clost to stopping and selling my shoes on ebay. I have managed to put a few miles down since then but am not really enjoying it. I also have a 10k on Sunday, but not even sure if I can be bothered getting out of bed.

Wish I'd never done the marathon.

I'd like to do it in under an hour but I've been a bit slack with my running recently so I'm not sure if I can do it

Have a decent rest for the rest of the week until Sunday am and then go for it, it is your first one so getting round is an achievement, if you manage under an hour then that is superb.

Make sure you have something to eat about 2 hours prior to the race and are fully hydrated, drink lots the day before. Especially if it is going to be hot.

Be ready for the nerves too, I used to get it all the time and go to toilet often at the start of a race and race toilets aren't the nicest places.

Most of all enjoy the fact that you have achieved something most other people can't be bothered to.

GOOD LUCK and let us know how you get on.
