Default Key wouldn't turn

Hi all,

Something strange happened to my other halfs SV at the weekend- just wondered if the same had happened to anyone else?

We'd been riding for maybe an hour or so when we stopped to get petrol. When he came to switch it back on the key wouldn't turn... nothing obvious just wouldn't shift from off to on!

After about 10 mins or so and a lot of abuse! it finally did...? Seems very odd!

The bikes a 2000 model.

Any suggestions??
Thanks!

Squirt WD40 down the lock barrel and twiddle the key in the lock, then once its moving again oil it (I use 3 in 1). I think it just jams every now and again as so much water must get into the lock.

As well as this, seems funny but I know a lot of Svs that need you to push the key forward and then turn....gently.

Did he have the steering lock on? If its hard up against its stops then the keyy won't turn.

Might not be that - just woth noting.

Dont use WD40 use a proper lube, something silicone based or PTFE its much better a freeing stiff locks.

My GSXR does this now and again and my SV used to play up a lot with it.

Cheap and shoddy. Should have got a Honda.

Glad I could help.

I only use wd40 to clean the barrel, but then another oil to lubricate it.

I've done it for the past 7 years on SV's which sit outside in all weathers and the locks still work easily.

Mine did that and I did what dizzyblonde did for ages plus lube of all types. Finally I concluded that the lock was worn out.

Replaced the ignition barel with a new one and jobs a "jobs a good un" only issue being that the rear seat uses the old key

My VFR did this[1], figured it would still work if you pressed the key in one direction when trying to turn it. It got worse and worse until it died totally.

I'd start to keep an eye out on a replacement as if it's starting to fail it'll only get worse.

[1] The SV was never quite the same after someone tried (and failed at) the screwdriver in the lock trick.
