Default falling off on ice

Hi all,

bit icy this morning wasn't it... I got as far as the end of the road before encountering a layer of sheet ice on a sheltered bit of junction, less than 5mph and the bike just washed out underneath me. i've bent the rear brake lever (not snapped) - could i heat it up and re-bend it or am i likely to just snap it? it still works, but just very wonky.

Trains are a no-go for my 50 mile commute, so it looks like what i've feared - i'm going to have to buy a cheap car for the winter.

Opps! glad you are OK! I wouldn't heat up and re bend alloy, it makes it weak. I tried to bend mine back cold after my off, it just snapped. If it works, save up a bit and replace as and when.

I pulled away gently from the lights this morning and the back end was twitching all over the place, took it very steady after that.

Sorry to hear of your little incident though

Sorry to hear about your off. Glad that you're not damaged and that there's only slight damage to your bike.
I very nearly came off too this morning. I'd been riding for about 20 minutes, so thought that my tyres would have warmed up. I was going round a nice left hand bend that I usually lean right in to. Today I took the bend a bit slower and at less lean than normal, but the back end still slid. I suspect that the edges of the tyre weren't warm enough. I managed to save it, but still slid onto the other side of the road. Fortunately there wasn't any traffic coming the other way. Still, it was a bit of a nasty moment.

Yeah! I had to think about riding in. There was ice on my bike cover this morning & the bike stalled once (in the first 3 minutes of riding) apart from that no issues. But I do ride like your grand mother........

If you dont have crash bungs and are doing any sort of winder riding then get some! They work REALLY well

Its horrid when it just washes out aint it!? It happened to me once on diesel and once on Mud that a tractor had left for me

I had the back wheel snaking on a drain cover... doing 40 MPH cruising not even giving it anything and it snakes That was at 1pm. They really should fix drain's that would stop a lot of accidents.

There is so much salt on the roads here at whitby that i dont think there will be much ice... maybe your council is slack?

Take care.

I had a near off this morning the front just slid , the ironic bit was that I was on my way to pick up some R&G's ......

Will be happier when I get a new rear tyre & R&G's fitted on Monday

cheers Steve

I take it very gingerly in the mornings, first gear, upright, feeling for ice. None so far, but I'm expecting it soon...

Can fele the bike moving about underneath me alot more, and it has the knock-on effect of making me tense up...so more prone to coming off!

Got a wheelie this morning though. Only a little one, maybe an inch off the ground. as I pulled away enthusiasticly from some lights. Roar!
