i just checked over my bike after a ride this morning and ive noticed a black deposit that has run from the zaust all the way down the link pipe its quite sooty so im thinking its oil, the only thing i have done differant is installed a K&N air filter last night, to my knowledge its just the direct replacemant not any race or special type.. what is happening?

I doubt it's oil. I'd suggest you have an air leak in the exhaust system.

Yeah, I'd go check your joints and see if they are blowing. There are plenty of different types of heat resistant sealants you can use to ensure a complete air tight connection.

Further, all new exhausts blow crap out the back when they are new. So if, when giving it a fist full of throttle you see black misty soot type stuff come out the back, don't fret to much. It's normal. At least for a few miles it's normal.

to be honest mate i know that its not as tight as it could be i bet its blowing thinking about it.. ive had it on for about 80 miles now so it wouldnt be that.. i was just worried it was running lean and kicking crap out the back.. what is running lean? and why is it bad?

Running lean is too much air to fuel mixture. Running lean means the engine will run hot. Not good and can cause serious engine damage.

Easiest way to check how it's running is to check the spark plugs.

Also black smoke will indicate a rich running engine, brown smoke will indicate lean running engine.

A bit of carbon out the back is fairly normal, an air leak tends to cause popping and rumbling on the overrun too. (unless you've got PAIR system, in which case it'll do that anyway)

It used to kick out black smoke with my old race can, that was open baffleless this one has the baffle in so i cant imagine that would be running as rich as it used to.. maybe it is a chris says just carbon build up.. running out of a loose connection in my zaust.. sounds about right. it does pop but its a K5 pointy which has the PAIR system in it. so thats normal to me.

Yep maybe Chris is right. Cause I didn't mention a leaky exhaust at the beginning at all.
