REDEX and other stuff

anyone used this on a carbed bike, i cant really see it doing what it says but would be interested if anyone has had results

I've only got 10k on the clock so engine practically new anyway

I've used it on mine, though I have not noticed that much as I'm still getting bad fueling from my carbs. Though I have topped up again and will let you know how it goes.

ah yes i didn't realise it might clean out the jets, if it work let me now because i have slight fuelling probs aswell but nothing major

Oh so you can use this on bikes. For some reason i felt compelled to buy some in the garage today.

not being rude, but your better off having your carbs serviced and balanced before shoving Redex in there

The cleaning additives generally speaking do work, not to be confused with additives claiming performance improvements, which generally don't.

When fuel evaporates, which it does after every hot shutdown with carbs, you will get residues left behind. If the fuel has decent cleaners in it these deposits will mostly be cleaned away next time it runs. Some fuels are better than others at minimising deposits/gum/varnish and then cleaning it away again.

A similar thing happens in typical port injectors, with gradual plugging building up.

Regular (occasional, not every tankfull) use of a good cleaner will help ensure the deposits are minimised. Use as directed on the label.

Two other things to consider. Premium fuels (Shell V-Power etc) do tend to give better response particularly under tricky situations, like tipping-in after overrun with carbs for example, when A/F ratios often aren't very well controlled. Also iridium tip plugs generally do have a slightly better lean-limit than conventional types, maybe one or 2 A/F numbers, which can also smooth out some minor glitches in fuelling. I'm not saying these are substitutes for getting fuelling issues sorted, but they tend to help out in the tricky bits.

Hmmm, never been that keen on these things although some of the injector cleaners seem to do the job.

Oh and I had some ZX1 in an Armstrong MT500 on and enduro, smashed the sump out of it (on a log) and it managed another 18 miles like that , most impressive that.

I've heard a few people suggest that Redex is not suitable for bikes- it's designed for car engines and clogs bikes up a bit.

Is there something better out there that helps with carb icing?

Two things help with carb icing, Sikoline Pro FST, which is expensive or running premium fuels. Such as Shell or BP, though the shell works the same as the BP but you get a better price for you money. You do get better fuel economy for the money, which just about cancels out the cost, though at the bikes don't have a knock sensor its only tiny. I know this as I did a hole range of tests with it a few years ago, trying BP, Shell, and Sainsbury fuels. If you want to read more about it, then its detailed on my biking blog.
