...and is it south facing?

We have spent a fortune on plants over the years and I lost interest when they all copped the hard frosts we get here (miles from the sea) and those that survived became slug dinner. So now I'd just get some seeds, African marigolds are really nice and last all summer, and slugs don't like them. Get the F1 version. And to contrast, nicotianas are pretty. Finally, for architectural shape, a few cirsiums (look like huge silver thistles - they're frost resistant, slug proof, and have huge flowers like artichokes) are terrific.

For winter interest, a few mahonias and viburnums.

Sorted

slugs love marigolds!!! eat em in seconds. I would say experiment, its what i have done for years, but if i don't have a nice garden i get it in the neck from my mum and gran, especially my gran.....shes percy thrower!!

but yes, ask lots of old ladies, politely they're ace for gardening advice, tis why mines lovely in summer, apartt from this year when everything drowned from constant rain, and my naughty pooch digging

Fill it with those weeds that the kid seem to like. They will even do the gardening for you.

Talk about low maintenance

The garden is south facing but its at the bottom of the garden where the border is. Trouble is, its largely in the shade due to the shadow of the fence behind it. That way, it either needs to be pretty high (to catch the sun) or it needs to enjoy living in the shade in a warm garden (does get very warm in summer). Basically want it to be up and down in height, want some contrast in colour and texture but dont want masses of maintenance. Like gardening, but dont want to be constantly tending to it. Should suffice for a water every other night in summer and a feed or so a week
