Default DVLA Records?

Its crazy isnt it.

Having to ok the offer from my insurer with the GAP insurance people, which is fine.

However sometime between taking the now dead SV and sorting this all out, my V5 managed to get separated from all my other bike docs, including the insurance certificate I had with me.

So 3 weeks of turning the house upside down yields nothing, so looks like its time for a duplicate V5....

So I call the insurers, NIG to explain the delay and they are fine about it, even going so far as starting off a DVLA search to avoid me having to actually produce the V5, which looks like a bit of a result. They even suggest that if the GAP insurers want they can contact them and they will confirm my ownership etc.

So looking good.

So I call the RACWarranty people who are also the GAP insurers to explain about delay etc, and let them know that NIG are willing to confirm the details for them. Unfortunately nothing short of a copy of the V5 will do for them so off to the DVLA website......

So I read new V5 will be ?25 and take 2 weeks to get here if I do it by Credit Card on the phone.

So give them a call, give them the details, which match so they are able to send me a duplicate.

2nd bit of good news being that they can/will send it out today 1st class.

Why have the ability to give out confirmation of ownership etc when some people - the RAC - wont use it?

I phoned the DVLA as I had never received my V5. They sent me a duplicate FOC. I went to put it in the safe and found the original. So had 2.

I've always been a bit confused (generally and by this) The V5 shows the registered keeper, NOT the owner. I know for the main part they are one and the same, but what is your proof of ownership if it was a private sale?
