Default What oil and filter & plugs should i buy?

Hello People

I'm about to service my sv 650 2002 for the first time and need to know what is the best oil to buy? I need to know whether to get synthetic or fully synthetic and which brand. Please also recommend a shop i can use anywhere between say Old Street (london) and bromley in kent as this is my route to and from work and i want to go and buy it on my way home. Can you recommend which oil filter and plugs to go for in case my mate recommends me changing them at the same time.I appreciate any help you can provide.

Regards Tony

Semi Synthetic 10w 40 motorcycle oil (only use motorcycle oil), which you can get from halford or any motor shop. I use Castrol, but to be honest there really isn't much between them.

OEM oil filter seems to be the best and longest lasting (rust wise)

NGK CR8E Plugs (or the Iridium NGK CR8EIX)

I like Castrol Power1 (used to be called GPS) 10W/40 semi synth bike oil. I find it stays clean and the clutch frees quite nicely.

The relevant factor for being a bike suitable oil is the test for wet-clutch compatibility, and is shown as "JASO-MA" somewhere on the can.

There is always debate as to whether this is essential or whether any "car" oil will do. I think the answer is that the test is done for a reason. Some additives in some car oils can cause wet clutch problems, not to say they all will, but it's possible.

As for plugs, I get mine from http://www.spark-plugs.co.uk/ , I recommend iridium for easier starting, longer life, and generally beneficial characteristics. If ordered early in the day they will be delivered next morning in my experience.

Tanks Embee,

Interestingly, my Clymer manual purely states API SF/SG oil, and the Castrol GTX I put in meets API SL (which supersedes both of the above).

I'm planning a jaunt from the South East to Cornwall this weekend. Disregarding the wet clutch issue, surely the Castol will match the protection standards recomended? Can any mechanics give me any advice?

Hmmm, personally I'd see how it runs, if your clutch slips then you know it's a no-no.

Can't see the mechanical wear characteristics being a problem, the arguements about gears "chopping up oil" smells worse than gear oil to me and I've seen tests to say the same...

Also 10w40's generally aren't "energy conserving" oils which AFAIK are the cause of the clutch problems.
