Due to a number of problems i am having with my SV i have got despondent and am wanting something that i can put a 100% trust into as it is my only form of transport i can not afford for things to keep going wrong like my SV has done a number of times.
It is a 1999 V reg SV650S 24,000 miles Full service history Just fitted a new rear tyre, just had the carbs and valves checked. OEM Lowers, scorpian can - got original, double bubble screen - got original, OEM Suzuki seat cowl.... How much would i be looking at?? Also what other bikes would any of you reccomend?? Ive thought of the Honda CBR600F - Honda Reliability? Also the FI SV650S?? Dont seem to hear as many mechanical problems as the Curvey? Obviously these would have to be restricted so am looking for a bike that would run well restricted. Thanks Ash Last edited by sv_rider1990; 04-06-08 at 04:23 PM. |

The problem is you have a 9 year old bike, a FI SV would be at worst 6 years old.
I dont think the FI ones are any more or less reliable with age. Vehicles just cost to run.

Yeah i do appreciate its a 9 year old bike so id rather sell it soon and get the maximum amount i can and replace it with something a bit newer and up to date.
I've had it since October ive gone through 2 Rectifiers and now the garage think it could be a new generator.... a number of running problems and i am a student at college... I work when i can and i really cant afford to keep having to pay out big things that keep going wrong. Hondas are well known for their reliabilty. |

The Curvy's are just a reliable as the Pointy's so no real unbalance there, as for the SV being unreliable well the 750 has been 100% and so far so has every other SV I have owned.
Yes the Hondas have the name for reliabilty, but with the modern(ish) Japanese bikes they are all as reliable as the next and its all down to how they are treated! |

What exactly wrong with the SV?
They arnt particularly bad for reliability... it might be something easy to fix. ![]() And about Honda reliability... Its kinda a myth... or plain wrong depending on what you look at. Basically the VF's of 83-84 were renound for breaking down (chocolate cams they wer called...) and so up until recently all VFR's were over engineered for ultra reliability... the latest V-tec isnt the same. So basically any of the VFR's except the V-tec VFR's are really reliable... apart from the Rectifiers... which break fairly often, The rest of the range are like anything else. OK. ![]() |

I know im probably getting just despondant and im sure tomorrow i'll love it again tommorow.
The thing is it seems that since ive owned it, its spent more time at the garage than in mine and less time me out riding it. Also i had ?250 spent on it at a garage having the carbs and valves done and checked and when i collected the 2 mechanics seemed like they didnt know who did what and they both had different stories. |

And no evidence to prove it like a sheet of measurements of the valve clearances or anything and i guess you just have to put your trust in them but i dont trust them.... and feel like ive been taken advantage of just because im 17... Its up at the garage now having a check to see whats wrong with it now whether its another rectifier or they said it could well be the generator that needs doing!

go to another garage!! if they can't account for exactly what's being done, i'd be most unhappy and be taking my business elsewhere!! post up your approximate location and i'm sure someone here'll be able to recomend a good place for you. maybe even if you're really lucky someone here might be able to help you directly for much less than your average stealer!!

well I must admit I have 2 curvys and if you had half the problems I've had between the two of mine this year so far, I'd say you would want to set fire to either one of them. A bike is my only transport to the outside world, and if I don't have either of them on the road I get kennel sick and it really makes me feel down.
I wouldn't sell either of them though, even if I have spent nearly 2 grand between the two already this year on repairs, and parts( and YC helping me get em sorted). TBH whatever bike you will get next, there will be money to be spent on it. It goes with the territory. You could have a bike like my other halfs commuter thats 22 years old, leaks oil everywhere, looks like its been sat in the Thames and still is as reliable as the day it came into the world. Or a new bike could have all the probs of the one you've got......its just a gamble. Hope you get some joy in whatever you decide to do ![]()
