Question lubing cables

Could do with lubing clutch & throttle cables have bought a throttle cable oiler pen (it likes a needle).

I was going to use regular engine oil , for the clutch I can squeeze oil down from handle bar end , for throttle I guess I can expose throttle cables by pulling back rubber cover and squeeze oil down)

Is normal oil ok to use or would WD40 etc be better ?
Should I be lubing sv cable , is it lined ?
Any one used a needle type thingy to oil cables in situ with success , or am I better undoing cables ?

Cheers Steve

WD 40 is more a water dispersant(WD)than a lubricant.I use the same old engine oil that I put on the chain. Its a disgusting habit that I cant kick!
I think you can buy special stuff for cables, but any lube is better than no lube.

I like to use "nylon/rubber lubricant" silicone oil, aerosol from Halfrauds or similar. It's very thin so works its way down the cables, it works really well with nylon lined cables (clue in the title), and seems to be more or less water repellent.

I make a small funnel arrangemet round the cable end (disconnected), hold it upright and spray a little oil into it, let gravity do the rest.
