I had a most excellent time. Pete & Debs sure know how to host guests. Just a shame we couldn't have gone for longer. The drive from Newbury - Dover - Calais to St Servant was a bitch though. It's a long way when your limited to 80mph.

The motorways have tolls. If you speed between the tolled area's you will be fined on the spot and the fines are steep. The ticket you get as you go through the toll is time stamped and checked at the other end. If you get to the other end before a certain time, they know you have been speeding.

If you ever do the trip again you could always use these guys: http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/ro...ortsmouth-caen

That way you could get the ferry direcly to St Malo

Or cane it down the motorway until you reach the toll booth, stop just short and have a fag to kill some time Not that you smoke of course Si.

For me the over riding point was the cost. I worked out all possible routes, timings and costs.

The Dover - Calais crossing was the cheapest (including taking fuel into account) and also the timings worked out best. I had to keep in mind that our hosts were waiting for us, so couldn't really turn up too late.
