Default Prescott: The Class System And Me

Shamelessly opening a political debate, did anyone watch this last night? Very interesting telly indeed. Mrs P's eurotrashiness and the young ladies from South London were worth their weight:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7683975.stm

Very opinionated (or at least the only one of them able to speak), but distincly lacking in any factual information - she seemed to be wholly brought up on extremist media opinion.

As for Mr P, I'm not sure what to make of him. All cod Old Labour dogedness and a utopian view of how anyone working class can make good. It's afar more complicated than that. Looking forward to the next installment.

Just been listening to him on the way home from work on the Chris Evans show on Radio 2, didn't see the show but I'm intrigued now, so I'll give it a go on catch-up........

Much against the grain I know(but thats me for you)But I have always liked Prescott.
Not the greatest intellect but always straight down the line and quick with a punch when one was well deserved.

Didn't see. I don't like the man but I do respect what he achieved.

Watched it later on on catch-up, thought it was good, didn't have the time of day for the guy when he was the dep PM, & thought he was clueless as the transport minister, with his proposals for pay per mile motorway use, but as a person last night, he came across well, he seemed more human for all his insecurities, and discomfort with the filthy-rich and landed gentry, I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere near the toff's either, particularly at the Henley Regatta, (although the hairy bikers didn't seem to mind) The bit with the the three young London lass'es was a gem, the mutual respect and appreciation I found quite unexpected...

Look forward to Him introducing 'em at the house of commons next week.......

I only caught the end of it. I come from a largely classless society and had no idea or concept of it coming into the UK. I still dont understand it other than the obvious money and the education differences. I think its a good thing for Britain. It helps to retain Britains distinctive cultures.

I've always thought that's ironic, because they can. But only if they've had the drive to do it, not because of anything the government did for them.

Of course, the continued destruction of the comprehensive education system by dumbing down has done untold damage to the underprivilaged by massively handicapping them compared to privately educated students. Something that's ultimately (if it hasn't already) going to widen the 'class' gap further still, and something that the government should be utterly ashamed of.

I have never liked Prescott, he is a dinosaur, from a bygone political age and outlook.

Yes we are poles apart. I would turn off rather than listen to him. Yet despite being politically poles apart, I can listen to and appreciate the thoughts and speeches of Tony Benn. He is at least articulate.
