Default Are you supposed to filter on your bike test?

No odds to me, I've had my license 16 years. I took my test in a quiet town with no traffic but in a modern city what are you supposed to do when you come across a traffic queue? Zip ahead between the cars and leave poor old examiner on his pan euro at the back or sit there like a car? If not to filter then why not if we bikers purport it to be a reasonable and legal action? Was just wondering this today while weaving around the rush hour, knocked a van mirror (again) oops.

Dunno, but I learnt how to filter on my DAS. The instructor said it was important that we learnt how to do it properly

That was four years ago

My instructor told me that if an opportunity to filter arose, then yes, you can. But he also added that since we hadn't practised it I should be sure that it was going to be safe, and plan ahead.

TBH I wouldn't have been able to spot a safe filter anyway, as I was busy concentrating on everything else

You can do it, but its easier just not to. Too many things can go wrong when filtering to worry about it on your test.

Plus time sat in traffic eats up your test time.

Just done my DAS and test and in neither was filtering mentioned. We sat in traffic during training and waited. One thing about filtering though is that I know a few car drivers who find it really annoying when bikes pull up at the front of traffic light queues after passing them. I suppose they see it as rude and arrogant.

Yeah, funny that. When you're in Tesco no one freaks out because you went past their trolley to get to the oven chips cos there was room! *

* They do in Aldi

Another guy on my course was out when they hit traffic, the examiner said "We are coming out of test conditions now, we need to filter or we will never get back"

But if you went past them to the front of the checkout queue you'd be in trouble!

Not if you would be keeping going and not hindering their own progress I hope . A little C2 did drive into me the other day at the front of a traffic queue actually, most weird sensation having it's wing pressed against my leg as we crept along, the crash bars kept it from causing damage or injury luckily.

Er excuse me but nobody buys a motorbike to sit in a queue of traffic. And that includes you Give it a few weeks and you'll have ventured to the front of the line smirking from ear to ear and thinking 'wow did I just do that?' And then before car drivers know it, you've gone and you're laughing so much that you want to do it again - and again - and again
