Although I am fairly sure that I am not on the database, (you never know the unscrupulous methods some would go to to build this thing). I have for years been appalled at the cavalier way the government has gone about seizing DNA samples of innocent individuals. retaining it on the pretext that it needs it to aid the fight against crime etc. Thankfully for once Europe has come down in favour of rights of the individual over the state. What are the chances of our wonderful government actually doing the decent thing and removing all dna/fingerprints etc of unconvicted individuals from their big brother all knowing monolith. Personally I think there is no chance. I sense a fight

Agreed. It speaks volumnes about our good old British justice system that this case could have gone through all the levels up to the House of Lords and been lost every time, then we get a 17---0 verdict at the European Court.
I do think there would be a considerable political gain to be had for any party that stood on a platform of reigning in the Big Brother State that is taking over our lives. Seems to be the natural ground for the Lib Dems, but they only half heartedly persue it.

if someone is arrested for something...in this case assualt...and released without charge, do you not think its fair to take that persons DNA and run it against a "wanted" DNA database? even tho they are innocent of this particular crime?
thats what this sounds like....can only go by personal experience a number of years ago a 12yr old girl was raped on some wasteland near to were I grew up. it was on the news one night not long after it happened and i was in the pub with friends and friends of friends. when this was shown one of them jumped up and proceeded with all the usual "if i knew who it was id kill em" "its sick" etc etc.... a few yrs after this....that same guy who stood up shouting at the tv was arrested after a fight in city centre, his DNA checked and low and behold, it turns out it was HIM whos DNA had been found on the girl that night. Im all for it, if u have nothing to hide whats the problem for the greater good? |

Its only in England and Wales... Scotland already destroy the DNA of innocents. Why is it when I read this stuff Scotland is always the place that don't take liberties.
This country is slowly turning into a automated police state. |

yes but surely its best to keep that record there incase one day that erson might just commit a real crime and it will take a few minutes to find out who that person is, its stupid to get rid of things and will put alot of future crimes behind jsut because people think its against are fing human rights? who cares what exactly are people going to do with your DNA report??

i couldnt care less if my DNA is on a database as long as the usual screwups with leaking stuff dont happen.
actually working for the police i can see this as being a good idea. Nanny state yes, police state we are not. you have no idea the number of crimes that are committed by individuals who never get caught because we dont have a record of their DNA or any other forensic information. these are the same people that will trick your grandma into letting them into their house to check the water etc, and then make off with their pension/savings. as has been said, if you have nothing to hide, why worry? the NHS probably has records of your blood group and god knows what else already, why is this any different? if the worse case came and you were suspected of a crime and DNA was the deciding factor, wouldnt you rather be cancelled out of the equation with it? civil rights go both ways, why protect the robbers/rapist/burglar etc? why not the tax paying public leading a decent life? |
