Hi,
Quick question here. Have an 03 650s with 9,500 miles on it. Bought it from a dealer about 4 months ago with 8,000 miles. Bike runs fine with the exception of a rather loud ticking noise when cold (been told its the CCT) as it disappears much more when engine has warmed up. I've noticed for the second time that when I ride the bike relatively hard and fast (+7,000 RPM and +50 MPH) that when I park in the garage there seems to be a burning/friction smell (had a 05 GSXR 600 before for 3 years and never experienced this type of smell before). Not the type of smell from a fire but something like metal rubbing against metal...if that makes any sense. Any suggestions/ideas as to what I can check? I know it's not much info but I am relatively new to bikes/repairing them and any info will help. Btw, at this point I plan on continuing to ride and monitor the smell. Thanks in advance! |

Does it only do it when it's wet?
Could just be water on the engine/exhaust burning off.

Do you have ACF50 or similar protection on it? Cos it can stink! I thought my bike was on fire....
I'm sure nobody on here is as daft as me and you will get some good responses soon. |

Both times it was not raining outside. However, it was colder than usual. When I ride normally I do not recall experiencing the burning smell. Since I have only had the bike for a few months, I'd say both times I noticed the smell when I was riding extra hard.

Most likely the road crap burning off on your hot parts, is it a new silencer on the bike as the packing inside them tends to stink for a while after a ride.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I do not have any type of ACF protectant and the exhaust has been on the bike since I bought it. Looks like there is no need to worry at this point. Any other suggestions/ideas are always welcome. Also, is there a way to find out if my brakes are dragging and causing the problem?
Thanks again! |

Make sure nobody's watchin so you don't look too funny and get yr nose right down and at least try and locate the area, that's a starting point and particularly over the brake calipers as soon as you stop. Like the rockster said, could be the brakes getin to hot or dragging. Overheated brakes def have a friction smell after all it's friction stopping you
