I was just wondering if there is a 'rule of thumb' method which applied to setting up the standard rear shock preload for different styles of riding? I know very little on the subject and am 13 1/2 stone currently set on the 3rd from hardest setting. I dont really know if this is right or not?
Could anyone shed a little light for both me and any other fairly new riders as to the effects of adjusting it and what it should be? ![]() |

On the curvy anyway there are 7 settings, 3rd from top is fine most of the time, 2nd is better for track/pillion but is harsh on the road solo. It's a blunt instrument but one way is to adjust it so you feel bumps at both ends i.e. one end isn't massivley harder or softer than the other.

The only adjustment you can make is pre-load. This simply adjust how far up, or down the total travel of the shock the bike is for a given load. If the shock is topping out more than bottoming out back it off a bit, if it's bottoming out more than topping out add a bit more
