Default Chain tension - with a twist!

Hello all,

Long time since i've been on, hope all are well?

Im having issues with chain tension....my original chain was on 13k and starting to give up the ghost...doing all of 200 miles before becoming really really slack.

I had a new DID o ring chain and sprocket set (front and rear) fitted on friday...did 70 ish miles yesterday (saturday) on a gentle spin, get home and is back to being as slack as....well......insert your own witty comment here!!!

Prior to getting the new bits fitted, I had a look thru old threads on here (as I make no claims to being mechanically minded) and then checked with the mechanic that he did the bike up with the correct torque settings....which he did.

Is this just initial bedding in stretch? Or is a bigger problem on the horizon?

thanx in advance

I was told when I got my new chain fitted that it would stretch quite a bit from new, sounds normal to me, just make sure to keep it adjusted.

yer it'll settle down now and shouldnt need any more adjusting (if u keep it lubed) for a few thousand miles.

Fingers crossed, still, gonna pop it back to the garage tomorrow and get it adjusted and then hopefully enjoy summer in greater quantities than 200 mile trips!!

cheers

+1. I had the same worry with my new chain. Massively experienced old boy at work advised me that it was normal for chains to do most of their stretching at the start and end of their lives. I've since found that to be my experience too.

I'm "running in" a new chain and sprockets, and keeping a close eye on the chain tension. I'll post up my observations at the end of the week with regards to chain tension, i think this is a good thread with a good topic and some deliberate obervations of initial chain stretching should help

Hi Guys,
If a chain normally stretches as it beds in from new, how come that new bikes don't seem to need chain adjustment in their early days?

Cheers
