Default Ideas of what causing running issues.

Hi Guys,

Having problems with a 99 curvy.

So far, we've serviced it, Plugs, Oil, Air filter.

Today, we've put a cap full of redex through each carb and replaced air box and started.

Smoking obviously and backfiring quite frequently when given a few rev's.

After the redex clears, the bike starts to sound ok and the poping/backfire stops. This was with the old plugs which were fitted when the bike was test riden and seemed fine.

My mates fit's the new plug's and everything seems ok, fit's the rear panel that covers reg/rec. starts the bike and back to square 1.

All thoughts welcome, pressure on Mod 2 next Thursday and would love to be able to go for a ride.

Rob.

there could be a electrical fault, maybe a loose conection, on the HT coils etc..
i know there are a lot of connectors on the o/s pannel (right hand side of the bike) a poor earth on a car and faulty ht leads or faulty coil would cause missfire lumpy running and sudden cut outs. (well thats what i cahanged on the mk3 golf and seemed to work)

ignition faults as in haynes
loose,corroded wiring
faulty ht leads or coil
faulty ignition switch
faulty neutral side stand switch
faulty pulse generator coil or damaged trigger on alternator
faulty throttle position sensor
faulty ignition control unit

long list i know but if i was to guess i would say faulty puls generator coil (there are connectors with are near the side pannel under the fairing.

Cheers for all the pointers guy's

It's starts and ticks over pretty well, just when you give it some rev's it thinks it's in a war zone, or should i say sounds like it is.

The bike was test ridden, not for long maybe 10 mins or so. The guy who looked over it with me has years of experience with bike and i'm confident if it had played up he would have spotted it.

Will start the search around electrical points.

Can i rule out a dodgy reg/rec ?

Thanks so far

Rob.

It doesn't sound like reg rec. Sounds like water or other crap in the fuel.

Good afternoon all.

If that doesn't cure it check the HT caps where they join the leads. If you have a bad connection there pulling the caps off to change the plugs may have temporarily sorted the problem by making a good contact.

Try putting the old plugs back in. You never know! I've seen a few dodgy new plugs in my time.

Ditto Yorkies advice, water in the carbs is pretty common nowadays.

Cheers.

Cheers Spannerman,

Old plugs have been tried again and problem still there.

One of the HT caps is a little loose, but as far as i am aware, second hand info, is providing a good spark.

For some strange reason, the breather pipe at the end of the tank had been sealed of!, this was removed and dirty water ran out, not a massive amount, but enough to register it was there.

Re; Water in carbs' is it possible to get this out without stripping carbs?

Personally, I'm not the most mechanically minded person around.

The bike has only covered approx 500 miles between M.O.T's

Thanks again.

Rob.
