Default Wasps

during our holiday we were being pesterd by wasps, both in and outside or cottage

My wife noticed them flying under the roof tiles. So being brave I lifted up the loft hatch and had a quick look.

This is what I saw!

Attachment 5017

In my line of work I see quite a few beasties cockroaches, tropical moths & butterflies, so i'm not particularly scared. But this freaked me out.

One othe useless fact is they were German wasps, smaller but no less a threat than our own native wasp.

The photo was taken after the pest man had nuked the nest

I noticed the beginings of a wasps nest in the loft the other day. I share with a mate and its his house so i was sure to tell him about it as soon as he got in. He went outside and looked up at the roof for a bit and said...well i cant see many going in and out. I explained again that it was just the start of one (was about the size of a tennis ball) and it'd be best if he got rid of it now while he can before it got out of hand. His reply...i cant be bothered.

I;m moving out anyway so its gonna be funny when he tells me about what a pain it was to get rid of in a few months time. The div.

Bubble...you clealry didnt come to the AR and see just how many pyros were having to be held back from the fire. There was a good reason we had a "fire team" otherwise half of essex might still be ablaze, lol.

Having studied wasps very briefly, I can assure you that they are not all bad and they are also very beautiful. That nest was a cracker, such an amazing construction. They may annoy us, but wasps are beautiful animals and I for one do love them, even though they can be bad tempered and irritable little monsters.

I always feel it is such a shame that wasps can't coexist with us the way bees can. My Ex-Father in Law kept bees right up until he passed away. He was such a gentle man and his bees were equally docile. After his passing, my ex said we had to tell the bees because it is tradition. So she went and had a quiet moment with them. I don't know if they understood, but I know it helped her deal with her loss.

The things we think of when we open a thread on here.

Aye Janey, I agree with you, I don't see them as bad and I did think it a shame to kill them. But I've got 2 kids to worry about, especially as they don't like wasps!

During the night they were attracted by light in gaps around the windows into the loft space.

Wasps do do good work in destroying other pests

It's the 2nd time the cottage has had a wasps nest, but the other one was the size of a tennis ball and outside in a bush. This one was the size of a beach ball!

Potentially 25,000 invaders
