Default Tyre Run in

Hi guys,

Just wondering how long/many miles does it take to run in a set of tyres?

Being new to a bike, maybe it's me imagining things, but i often get the feeling that the back tyres is moving about, even if riding in a straight line.

There has been a amount of wind on the evenings i have riden, so not sure if its that.

Tyres are the Maxxis super radials

Rob.

about 70-100 miles, more if you are only cornering ocassionally e.g. motorway commuting.

Also you rear tyre should not feel as if its moving in a straight line - that is probably just the wind!

Avon before last I put on was feeling fine. I was pretty steady for 30 miles and then gradually built up to normal pace for next 20 or so. By 60 miles I was deliberately trying to make it slide and it felt normal. So I reckon just a heat cycle and it be right.

Safe bet is to ride like a girl for 100 miles, but I didn't have the patience, or the petrol for that around North Wales!

Fair one.

If it feels like the back is moving around especially in wind, make sure you don't have a death grip on the bars as this will exaggerate it.

Check your pressures 33f-36r is a fair one but some prefer them higher.

Also rear shock preload, not enough can make the back wallow if you don't have enough on.

The actual run in period is much less. Some say just one heat cycle for the carcass to bed correctly on the wheel. They say 100 miles as it's a basic milestone and avoids any legal issues. I think the main purpose is to get rid of the release agent that they use to remove the tyre from the mould which is a little slippy. Just take it easy and gradually increase lean angles and speed etc. 100 miles is overkill in my opinion but you need to be using all the tyre to properly remove all of the slippy stuff.

I would check the pressures. I find that if the front is a lower than I'm used to then the rear feels like its moving about.

I ran in a new rear on the AR, worked a treat.

I scrubbed in my contis well over about 30 miles on a nice hot day no problem at all.
I find that the weather effects how quick i can scrub in.
I'm more careful in the wet and take longer to get the most out of them
