Topped up the oil on my curvey today and when i unscrewed the filler cap there was white gunk around the hole? Looked a bit like white grease? Is this a sighn the oil needs changing? The bike has been doing short journeys lately, could this be anything to do with it?

Short Journeys is the cause of that I'd wager, its water emulsifying in the oil.

Relax, its most likely to be condensation because the air is cold and damp and your not getting the oil hot enough to evaporate all the moisture out of it.
Mine was the same but a good afternoon out yesterday has cleared it and the coolant level has not moved in the last 600 miles. (I've only done 600 miles on it) |

This is the cause.
If it's what you need to do with your bike, it's what you need to do - but it's just about the worst way to treat your bike I can think of. When you run your bike lots of nasty acidy moisture is created, when it's hot that stuff gets evaporated, if you don't run your bike until it's properly hot that stuff builds up in the oil, oil and watery things don't mix so the resultant emulsion is what you're now finding.

Yup, the dreaded condensation emulsifying into mayonaise.
My bro used to get it when he had a 900ss.

You don't need to take it far to get rid of that crap, even a steady run down the motorway will get enough heat into everything after 10-15 miles.
