Default Spark checking - correct procedure?

ok im going to recheck the spark plugs tonight, ive still got the old ones. What is the correct way to prepare for this and the correct way to check and prevent mishaps. Do i need to take both out, one at a time, plug the plug holdes in the cylinder head?

I appreciate the advice (trying to keep my head straight on this ignition fault diagnosis)

You don't need to plug the holes. Just remove the plugs, clip the HT leads on and rest the metal body of the plug against the engine to ensure it's grounded. Take both out to prevent the engine starting.

You don't need to take plugs out at all. Just pull caps of and stick old plug you have in there and rest on engine bolt or any ground as described above.

gotta be very careful with this approach....petrol vapour will ignite just as well outside the engine as in.

Always make sure that you have the spark plugs you are using to do the test, touching a metal surface all the time while testing. Some ignition circuits can be damaged if this is not done.

Extremely unlikely with a carb, with the plug out the vast majority of air is drawn in through the plug hole rather than the closed throttle. Even if a tiny bit of fuel were drawn in the mixture would be so weak the chances of it igniting are negligible.

On an injected system you should pull the EFI fuse (or unplug injectors) to prevent any fuel being injected.

that was my point, turning off fuel supply would be wise.
