Default ACPO Speeding Guidelines, Old Bill please confirm?

Front page of some of the national tabloids recently ran a story saying that the guidelines for speed enforcement were changing.

Now up to 86mph in a 70 limit, up from the 10% +2 of 79mph. Above this an FPN, below this a speed awareness course for a first offence.

Sure there would be other new guidelines for other posted limits, but the article I read didn't go into details.

Current guidelines are here

http://www.pepipoo.com/files/ACPO/AC...guidelines.htm

Can anyone please confirm or deny this and if true state what the new guidelines are?

I did hear a rumor to this effect last week, something about the money from Speed awareness courses stays local where FPN money goes into central government funds so our local camera enforcement partnership had moved the goalposts.... Seems like a good idea to me, I'll ask the Traffic Sgt tomorrow what the new rules are and are they National or just local.

I'm sure someone will shoot me down in flames very shortly but I don't think that sounds like a bad idea. I've not been on a speed awareness course myself but a couple of people I know have and they all reckoned it changed their attitudes towards inappropriate speed much more than a fine and points would have done.

Unfortunately they will be using the money from the speed awareness courses to turn on the cameras again.

I was handed 3 points a while back and a letter arrived a month after I paid the fine offering me the speed awareness course, as I didn't have another £90 to hand over and you needed photo ID, which in my case is my licence (which the police had), I couldn't take them up on it.

Saying that, I had to jump through hoops to say I wasn't taking the course, had to phone the AA, the cops, the court etc.

Tell you what, getting banned for a couple of weeks and nearly losing my job and the resultant massivly expensive car and bike insurance deffo slowed me down, and that was 5 years ago.

I did a speed awareness thing the other week and it was quite boring tbh, I did get a couple of useful bits of info out of it but it is farely rare for me to speed anyway, just got nabbed when I was running late to get the bike in for a service and MOT.

The most eye-opening thing was the other people on the course, one woman thought the national speed limit sign was a no entery and admitted to only looking one way when pulling out of junctions, only 3 people in the room knew that a stop sign was octagonal, or that a give way had the horizontal side at the top rather than bottom.

There were 3 'Professional' drivers, 2 psv (me and one other lad) and 1 Hgv 2. we had to stop answering all the questions to give the others a chance.

From the person in the know at work, ACPO guidelines are pretty much as said by Ralph, 10% +9mph. This means they can offer a speed awareness course for up to 86 on the motorway/dual carriageway, 75 in a National, 42 in a 30 etc etc, you can do the maths. Don't expect to get offered too many though, apparently they don't have to give you one if it turns out you're on first name terms with all the lectures.....!

You don't think it's a bad idea if we shoot you down in flames? OK!

Take that Varmint!

Apparantly they are running them at cost, so don't make any money, given it's only about 100 quid to go on one, whereas any other non-subsidised private driving course would be more than that for a days tuition, it's believable.

Cool, thanks for confirming, I wasn't sure if it were just the tabloids run out of stuff to write.

Now 10% +9mph

not the 10% +2mph that we used to have.

They are only guidelines though - they do not change the legal limits.
