Did you buy a bike without test riding? What were your thoughts once you rode it/got it home?

I've done that 5 times so far. Results have been mainly positive, but I'm easy pleased. I've always at least sat on the bike though to make sure the riding position is OK, and had a listen to the engine.

I think I've only ever test ridden a couple of the many bikes I've owned. Provided it starts, doesn't rattle where it shouldn't, and does where it should, you can see most things just be looking. Gearboxes are just about the only real area of risk and I've been lucky so far.

All but Dave the SV.
125, my mate did. Suzy well, if it wasn't right I'd have punched Matts head in until he fixed it, and did regularly! Raptor, got Pete to ride 100 miles home on it, then again when the radiator was fixed under warranty. Been pretty much pleased with all of them. Sat on all to my hearts content, and picked and pulled at rust and dodgy bits, heard them all etc.

Yes after doing lots of research and review reading. Usual first thoughts were along the lines of "what have I done, This is way faster, different riding position and nothing like my last bike. Oh how I wish I had my old bike."
all except the gs500 fell into that category..all depends on the age, mileage, history and px of bike.

Well, kinda. I was so green buying my SV I just wanted to see if it was beefier than the CB500 I did my training on, I'd already ordered a SV sport but they only had a naked as a demo so I gave that a quick go for 20-30 mins.
Saying that I did buy a CBR600 from london (I live in cheshire) on ebay and got the train down there and rode that back with barely a cursory glance over it (even greener than buying my SV as this was first) The guy had put an MOT on it so I guessed it would be alright but I since realise how foolish of an assumption that was. |

Travelled up to Carlisle for the SV having only read reviews and sat on one in a showroom. Rode it home and instantly liked it. 2 years and 16500 miles later I'm now looking for a change.
Did the same with my first bike, a brand new Yahama YZF-R125. That one was a tad silly, spending well over £4k (bike, insurance, gear) on a whim after liking the CBT... but it turned out well as I loved it (and then sold the bike for a couple of hundred quid less than I'd paid 8 months and 4000 miles later). For the next bike I'm test riding various ones as I have more of an idea what I want/expect. Also easier having had my licence for a couple of years, no problems getting a test ride now. Couldn't get them full stop for the first two. Last edited by christopher; 25-07-11 at 01:32 PM. |
