Default Running problems after fitting exhaust.

Hi all! Just fitted a Remus Innovation exhaust to my bike, started the bike up and it ran fine then took it out round the block and everything was ok. Got the bike back in the garden and gave it a few twists of the throttle and its throwing black smoke out and popping/backfireing ??

its a 2001 sv650 curvy

Such problems are indicative of excess fuel, that is; richness of mixture.

Either a choke is stuck partly open, a jet has rattled loose or a float is punctured/stuck.

Whatever the exact problem is, it's not the exhaust.

It was running fine with the standard can on. The popping/backfiring is happening at around 7000rpm, I've recently serviced the bike and changed the plugs. Is there anyway I can set the fuel and air mixture up?? Thanks

Took the choke cables out of the carb's today, they seemed to be working fine but looked a tad dirty, gave them a light spray of wd40 and pulled the choke lever in and out a few times, put the bike back together and its still the same.

also the bike was dry stored for 2 years prior to me buying it and the previous owner said he regularly started it but it was all running fine up until yesterday.

The idle seems abit uneven and im gettin small pops out of the exhaust while its idleing????

Pops indicate an air leak in either the exhaust or the intake or both. Pops at Idle is usually an air leak in the carb rubbers so I'd suggest checking that the vacuum hose hasn't come off the carbs.

I'd also check that the vacuum hose hasn't come off the fuel tap under the tank as this gives the exact symptoms you describe.

Checked the vac pipe on the fuel tap and it looks Alryt, I'm gonna take carbs off tomorrow and give them a clean and maybe throw a little red ex in the tank. If that doesn't solve it then I don't have a clue

If the pipe is connected, make sure it doesn't have any holes in it and also check that it's still attached once the tank goes down. If it's routed wrongly, it can pop off when the tank is lowered. And of course, make sure it's attached at the other end.

The vacuum on the fuel tap gives exactly the problem at 7000RPM and up you describe. The vacuuum tap itself may be the problem and you may have to unplug it from the tank and clean the little gauze filter on it and clean out the tubes.

Just had the inlet rubbers and air filter off, sprayed some carb cleaner into the carbs and put a jubilee on the tank vacuum pipe. The popping at 7k seems to have gone along with the smoke but it's still popping at idle? Can't see any air leaks anywhere??
