Default curvy engine problem

hi

Ive got a 2000 model curvy faired that has got a weird engine issue, the engine turns over but locks , i would say you can get about half of a full rotation on the crank,

Im completely baffled, what would you guys reccomend looking for? Ive checked the timing etc and all seems ok, The engine ran fine then just cut out

have you done the basics ? turned it over by hand to make sure it will rotate fully? engines don't "just lock up", you give the impression it was working fine one moment then not the next with no running or time between them ?

I suspect there's more to it than that, care to give us the full store ?

The engine will only turn partially by hand maybe half of a complete rotation and when it does turn you can here that theres some compression in both cylinders

Basically what happened was I had a really loud clatting noise coming from the engine, it got stripped down to find that the front cylinder piston was gradually working its way through the cylinder. I got a new cylinder, piston and new gaskets etc, rebuilt the lot, I reassembled the rear aswell because i took it apart to check for damage. anyway after rebuilding it and timing it, the bike ran , started up and ran fine, then just stopped dead and now the engine only turns partially by hand and locks instantly if you try to start it hence not trying to start it

full story? let me help you, when did it last run correctly, have you done any work to it recently, was it low on oil, have you check nothing is in the bore, if you want help you'll have to give more detail than the engine doesn't turn.

I have taken the crank end screw out if thats the correct term, put a 17mm socket onto it to turn it and its that, that will only do say half of a rotation, it doesnt turn around enough to see the rear cylinder timing mark

OK, did you find out why the piston was doing that in the first place, have you checked the crank?

If I was you I'd start by removing the heads and barrels, see if it turns then, if so the problem is top end, if not it's bottom.

I think that the piston did that through lack of oil, reason being is that the final oil seal went behind the sprocket cover and chucked all the oil out when on a ride a while ago. The bike had a new seal fitted and fresh oil etc, it was after that, that the clatting noise started.

somebody suggested that the water pump might be at fault but could this make the engine jam up?

it's probably a big end issue then, that's the first to go on oil stravation, the piston issue will have beeen cause by that, you need to strip it again and confirm the cause, to be honest it's wise to check the whole engine when something like that happens.

Cheers Mark.
