Exclamation Which chain and sprockets?

Hi Guys im new to the forum so if this thread has been covered then sorry to bring it back up and could you please point me in the direction of where i can view it?

back to the point, as the title says i think i need a new chain. having just bought the bike weeks back i dont know when or even if the previous owners changed the sprockets and chain or not but it looks rusty and awful. i wanted to know which is the best chain and sprocket combination for town riding? i dont mind sacrificing the top speed as i hardy ever go on motorways and i commute alot into town and work and would prefer smoother town riding etc to top speeds. please could you tell me the pros and cons as to which chain you recommend and why? also any links to where i can get them would be appreciated

many thanks for any advice

jason

Hi i`d recomend tsubaki chains - quit eheavy duty and you pay for what you get. Spannerman ( stu ) on here recomended them to me and when you see them you`ll see why. as for sprocket ratio`s pass on that (you mentioned smoother riding / top speed, so thought i`d mention it). When I replaced mine I went 1 or 2 teeth up on the back as I wasn`t doing many motorway miles but the acceleration was quicker. ( I hope that makes sense, I`ve had a few beers ).

Me personally would have top end sprockets for town . As will be wanting to wheelie round town with less teeth on sprockets . . And revs will be higher with at bottom end . I had a DID chain and was perfect for bottom and top end . Not sure what the teeth were tho .

kinda get what you mean, thanks for the reply im thinking of keeping a 15t front sprocket as ive read that reducing the front teeth increases wear and puts more load on the sprocket? and i think i will get a 48t rear but will that mean i need a certain chain? like a D.I.D 520? (what ever that means)

thanks

The way I see it is it`s like a push bike with gears ( thinking of ratios etc ) but if the pitch is correct & it has enough links then job`s a good un. Stick to steel sprockets as opposed to alloy as they will last longer - wont look as nice but they`ll last longer - if you commute.

Try someone like wemoto or robinsons foundry - they should be able to help.
