This may be one for any law/police members.
My nephew changed his car insurance over but inadvertantly left a gap of one day from the old one ending to the new one starting. You guessed it, pulled, car seized and 6 points. Now to be fair the police allowed him to call his insurance to change the start date but being easter they were shut. My question is, would it be worth going to court and pleading?? He has just moved to a flat so had a big upheaval and was in the process of moving when pulled. I know he was technically uninsured but luckily nothing happened and it was a genuine error. The police could only do their job and follow the rules but in my opinion i think its a bit unfair to catagorise him with the thousands that do this intentionally. He's 24 so the points will cost him dearly over the next few years. I know the onus is on you to check the details are right etc etc but anyone know if errors like this can be viewed and dealt with differently??

Nope.
I've been there and was told I'm SOL. You've committed the offence and there's no mitigating circumstances that can reduce the penalty. Going to court could however massively increase it. |

There is no technically to it. At the time he was not insured.
He is welcome to appeal it and give it a run at court but be warned punishments can go up as well as down.

Its a harsh lesson to learn. I didnt think there would be much chance.
It really is my nephew for the record, just in case some were wondering lol He was after my sv too so doubt he'll be able to afford it now

Very harsh lesson.
It doubled my car insurance from 500 to 1000 and is part of the reason I only have motorbikes now. Made very little difference to them. Maybe he'll be lucky like that and get your bike anyway. |

its easily done, I've done it and driven about 160 miles that day. wasn't until i'd got home and was in bed nodding off that i suddenly thought hmmm, followed by a quick check and "oh FFF....". Didn't get caught though.

That's one law that's the same in nearly every country.
He was driving a car that was not insured. End of.

I've had my mot in my van go out of date by a few months before, my van was only 1 year old when I bought it, so you don't need a mot until 3 years old, I was convinced it was September I needed its first mot but no, it was end of June ![]() |
