Curvy running poorly.

Hi guys and girls.

I appear to be having yet another problem... I'm determined to have a bike that runs properly one day!! Haha

Basically it was fine a few days ago, apart from that ticking sound (which I've been told is normal but I was still quite concerned about it), when i took it out yesterday it felt like it was chugging along, i could feel it pulling then not pulling then coming back and the revs were going up and down buy about 100-200rpm despite no change to my right hand.
Could it be that there's something blocking the fuel lines? Or maybe I need new spark plugs? I've got enough knowledge to fix things but not diagnose them haha

It's especially worrying as I need to do 150 miles to get home on monday or tuesday and have no money to go to a garage... :S

It's a fully faired 2002 curvy

Assuming your air filter is clean and useable, and that you have good spark at both plugs, start below....

Get the tank lifted, take the outlet pipe off where it reaches the fuel pump. (right hand frame, directly below the tank, to the side of the airbox)
Turn the engine, see if fuel is reaching that. If it is, reattach the pipe, take the two bolts off the fuel pump, and take the outlet pipe off the fuel pump where it feeds the carbs. turn the engine, and see if fuel is making it to that point.
If it is, from there check fuel is going from the T piece to the carbs. If you're still having issues, i'd start looking at blocked jets etc.

I'm also making the assumption here, you have checked your plugs, leads, coils etc before you start.

Check the fuel and vacuum lines under the tank and airbox. One could be loose or perished.

Do you when the carbs were last balanced?

I did think it could have something to do with the fuel somewhere down the line. I replaced the fuel sensor a couple of weeks ago and checked the lines at the same time and they all seemed fine. I did however play around with the idle screw because the idle felt a bit low but that was about 170 miles ago so I wouldn't expect that to really have anything to do with it.
I don't know when they were last balanced, I haven't had the bike long and I don't have any history on it :S

I haven't checked the plugs, leads, etc. yet so i'll check all that then try what you suggested

Have you been riding in particularly cold weather, around freezing point? The carbs on the curvy's like to ice up and the temperature sensor for the carb heaters is in a useless place to stop this from happening. You may also want to check if there is any water getting in your fuel. Could be from a perished filler port seal or the fuel itself being **** poor quality (I've had this problem before).

Murley: i'm up in yorkshire atm and the otyer day it did freeze, would leaving the bike to warm up for longer help do you think?

The sensor sits behind the radiator so it's constantly bathed in warm air. That means when the air temperature is cold enough to cause carb icing, the heaters still won't come on. I extended the cables For the sensor so I could place it directly into cold airflow. That solved the surging I got from the carbs icing up.
