Default my 1st sv650

hi guys, I have just purchased my 1st sv and must say it's bloody good fun to ride. my question is what should I check and are there any standard parts on the bike that would benefit from an upgrade. the bike is a 99 650x.
regards Tez

Welcome from another Curvy owner!

Front and rear suspension is the first thing to up grade if it hasnt been done.

keep a regular eye on the oil level and service the brake calipers, check the main electrical connectors for corrosion

thanks for the welcome's chaps I find the suspension is up to the job. the back end as been jacked up and rear shock seems a little hard, front springs are a little soft but the set up seems to suit the bike. the one thing I must get used to is the engine brake but's that's down to being a twin.

being new here I feel that i must add this. after 40yrs of riding bikes off road and on when I told the lads that I was going for an SV they told me BOLLOX they don't handle and forever breaking down. well after owning my 1st SV for a couple of days yes they do handle and I will go as far to say they are one of the best bikes I have rode for comfort and handling. not sure about the breaking down comments way too early, but sure like any other bike YOU LOOK AFTER IT AND IT WILL LOOK AFTER YOU.

I know a lot of people (me included) have experienced rectifier problems so keep an eye on that. Some like to swap it out for a Mosfet unit or CBR (i think) units.

I've got adjustable brake and clutch levers and I feel that they're a bit improvement but that's more a matter of preference.

cheers Alex, will keep an eye on the rec or wait for the dreaded rotten egg smell. the clutch is very light with a good feel to it, front brake is not the best but when it does grab it sure does stop. it's only done 16000 mls not bad for a 99 bike.

It probably won't happen but now you know.
there are places that make adaptor plates to allow you to fit calipers off other bike's that will give you better performance if you want. The rear brake is quite powerful, I use mine quite a lot.

That's really good going. I was excited with my 51 plate SV only having 23,000 miles.

OEM calipers are perfectly powerful enough for the SV, they just need a good service and a decent set of pads.

Don't bother with adaptor plates, they're more trouble than their worth

This
Stock brakes are good. I've never had an issue with them
