Default Engine carnage

Another teardown by Eric on his "I do cars" YouTube channel. This one is a 6 ltr pushrod V8 from GM. It's 55 mins long but help passes the time if there's nothing on tv. I cannot imagine the noise this engine must have made...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSaV_i88MSY

What I have learned from his previous teardowns is modern engines tend to be similar in construction. I have also learned that Ford use belts running in oil (!) plus many of his teardowns have been caused by poor maintenance.

If you're not a regular to his channel:
Uncle Rodney refers to big end knock
Anti-seize paste is the grey material from a disintegrating bearing.

"Blue" is his pry bar
He maintains that wrist pins (gudgeon pins) are indestructable and reusable (joke)
Water pumps are often admired before he throws them, ditto for cam chain guides.

Default Re: Engine carnage

It's interesting (well, I find it interesting, anyway) how much abuse old US pushrod V8s can take.

I follow the Vice Grip Garage YT channel, and Derek's thing is unearthing abandoned / forgotten cars from fields, barns etc, getting them to run again and then (usually) driving several hundred miles in them, documenting the roadside fixes that are needed.

On the latest one, it's a Chevrolet 454 that hasn't run in over a decade, and the motor is locked solid because of rust in the bores. But with some penetrating oil and applied brute force, the engine is happily rumbling away the next day.
