Carb needle shimming.

I'm just about to fit an Art carbon can bought off ebay and was thinking of doing the carb needle mod at the same time. How many people have done this mod and does it really make much difference to the fuelling?

As always you should really get the carbs set up on a dyno, but if you're too cheap then this will make it feel faster for nothing. You'll get a rich midrange on part throttle and a lean top end though, I'll bet.

Im real,realy sorry to dig up a three year old thread guys but has anybody done this?? im seriously considering it. Will it be any pokier?........cheers

There are better carb setup guides on the internet for the SV, shimming the needles is for the US SVs as they don't have notched needles

There was a detailed carb setup guide for the SV posted up a while ago from the ozzy SV site, there set up is closer to ours then the american bikes, i downloaded it because it was in PDF but have lost the link

Myself, I reckon the needle shimming mod is a bit of a bodge. It's usually used to iron out a lean spot at around 5000-6000rpm. That spot there, though it's mainly controllde by the needles, is also heavily affected by the jets- too small jets starves the needle circuit. The mod's a way to fix this without buying new parts (well, other than some washers) but for most folks going up a jet size would make more sense, in my experience.
